Tabi Gervis dishes out sugary grooves on "Lemonade"

07 June 2024, 09:30 | Written by Thomas Turner

Bottling up her own recipe for song of the summer, 21-year-old Tabi Gervis shares saccharine and zesty "Lemonade", a playful ode to having a crush in the sun

Born on one side of the Atlantic, and raised on the other, now 21-year-old Tabi Gervis is concocting her own brand of jazz-infused pop from Liverpool. Having released her whimsical debut EP just the little things in 2021, Tabi has spent the last three years honing her craft and transforming her sound to its current form; one that forwards soul and slinkiness in wonderful synergy.

Off the back of her return single "Sunday Late Shift" comes the effervescent and infectiously groovy "Lemonade" - the perfect track to pair with the summer heat. Encapsulating the feeling of having a crush while the sun beams down, the ice-cool "Lemonade" in question acts as both refreshing antidote, as well as delicious treat. With its tongue-and-cheek lyricism, the track's saccharine production is undercut with zest. "We could sit under the shade / feeling all our butterflies play," Tabi sings in the pre-chorus before introducing the hook that is bound to keep us pouring glass after glass, "because you're sexy and sweet / but you're sour as well."

"I wrote 'Lemonade' in the height of summer last year and I wanted to capture the fun, flirty essence of having a crush in the summer," Tabi tells of the track. "You never know if it's going to be a one time fling, or if you're going to fall in love, but having the crush is the best part. I have such a love for catchy pop melodies and blending them with laid back, live sounding instrumentation, and 'Lemonade' is no exception to that."

The soulful maturity yet theatrical wink of Tabi's vocals act as the pith of the track, with dreamy ad-libs adding sonic texture to the undulation of the melodies. It is hard to miss the influence of contemporaries like Lianne La Havas and Olivia Dean who centre the combination of jazz and pop in their own music, as well as those like Remi Wolf who have an undeniably playful, irreverent flair in their craftsmanship.

So what's the recipe for this "Lemonade"? One part soul-inflected groove to one part sugary pop. It's the flavour Tabi craves in the summer, and we have a feeling it'll be her track whetting the appetite of listeners for the rest of the season.
