Susannah Joffe leaves bad love behind in her dreamy synth pop single "Horses Can't Outrun Me"
When you finally take off the rose-colored glasses, it can be hard to think about all the time you spent stuck in an all-encompassing, toxic love. It’s a past we can’t run away any faster from. Rather than sink into regret, Joffe revels in the euphoria of her newfound freedom in her new empowering pop single.
Blending clever lyrics and addictive synth-pop melodies, “Horses Can’t Outrun Me” opens up with a vibrant hum of synthesizers. Born in New York City and now based in Austin, Susannah Joffe’s country-tinged harmonies swim freely in the dreamy, open sound. Feminine and sweet, the heavenly haze gives way to a driving drum beat and Joffe’s vulnerable lyrics. Her lips are bruised from kissing his feet, but she’s finally back on her own, and vows to never return.
“Regret isn’t a race / But I’ll take a ribbon for first place / I’m taking my heart off my sleeve / Cause love’s a dangerous thing,” she sings. Embellished with a dreamy omnichord and distorted guitars, the delicate and twangy landscape is an ode to moving on. Now on her own two feet, Joffe is able to step into the euphoria and live the life she deserves.
“‘Horses Can’t Outrun Me’ is a cinematic dream-pop track that blends nostalgic 80s pop with shoegaze textures, telling a story of emotional escape through Americana-laced imagery and vivid, surreal longing,” Joffe says about the single. Released in anticipation of her upcoming EP Cult Leader, the rest of Joffe’s project will arrive on July 27th via ONErpm. Blending the beloved dispositions of pop stars like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, Joffe has been paving a path for herself in pop since 2020. Previously opening up for acts such as Harry Styles, Mt. Joy, and Indigo De Souza, Joffe is all the more confident now than when she began.
With songs as punchy and empowering as these, Joffe is certainly a name to watch as she continues to build a vibrant space for herself.
