Sienna Spiro waits for love to unfold on the spellbinding ballad “ORIGAMI”
It’s not hyperbole to say that nineteen-year-old UK artist Sienna Spiro is one of the most accomplished and emotive young singers since the arrival of Adele in 2008, flaunting her storytelling on "ORIGAMI"
Spiro’s debut EP SINK NOW, SWIM LATER is an eight-song masterpiece that’s brilliantly divided into opposing “Sink” and “Swim” sides to convey specific emotions. You can feel the ache and authenticity in every syllable this Spiro sings. It’s almost as if she’s singlehandedly leading a postmodern revival of classic “torch songs” from previous mood-masters like Roberta Flack and Toni Braxton.
The EP’s lead track “ORIGAMI” is a captivating gem produced by Fred Ball, who has worked with other stellar artists like Rihanna and Jessie Ware. “This EP is collection of songs about change,” says Spiro. “I went through a period of so much change which I couldn’t control, and these songs are the product of that. It’s about the relationship with your body, falling in love for the first time, falling out of love, feeling on the outside of everything, being young and a woman. I hope people find something they are needing in this project and I’m so excited for it to finally be out!"
In pop music, most artists gradually work up to greatness, but Spiro has been firing on all cylinders right out of the gate. Her track “MAYBE” has garnered over half a billion views on TikTok since last summer; like the singles that have followed, it is an astonishingly intimate song that pulls you slowly into its emotional core.
Every track on this remarkable EP has its own unique strengths. “NEED ME” is a primal and powerful declaration of love, “BUTTERFLY EFFECT” grips instantaneously with a warmth and sophistication akin to RAYE, and beautiful piano arpeggios that have the feel of a butterfly in flight.
In this new age of digital music streaming, good often is the enemy of great. There are thousands of good songs and good vocal performances that often blind us to the truly great ones. Sienna Spiro has just given us eight extraordinary songs for the ages.
