Matilda Lyn soothes the soul with sugary sweet “Little Baby”
Honey drip vocals built around an ethereal pop melody push Gothenburg artist, and junior kickstart, Matilda Lyn firmly into one to watch territory.
Weaving a golden thread, and applying the gentlest of touches, Lyn’s contribution to soothe-your-heart-and-soul pop music is both sweet and comforting. Born and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden, she has already cemented an impression on those in the know with the release of two excellent EPs, 2023 debut A Bowl of Unripe Fruit and its follow up Sunwarmed.
Her previous projects painted bright brush strokes of a songwriter taking the wispy comforts of Jessica Pratt and Billie Marten, and applying the authority of a bold new voice exploring pleasure, loss and the do-it-all-again continuity of everyday life.
“Little Baby” is the perfect expansion of the cosy folk of her old work. There is a flirtation with electronica as expansive new ideas stream in like bright lights, and Lyn delivers from the get go. “In my house growing up there was always a mixed genre of music, my parents loved to sing Simon & Garfunkel songs together,” says Lyn.
Reflecting on the story of the track, “I love the message of this song. It’s not so much a pure love song, it’s deeply introspective focusing on insecurities. The song is full of my experiences growing up. Sometimes it’s easy to think you’ve grown up but then the little baby in you shows up”.
“Letting her go is like pulling teeth, that part of me, the little baby,” she sings, or rather releases, as life lessons unfold against a backdrop of sweeping instrumentation. It’s quite remarkable that “Little Baby” is only one part of the puzzle, with debut album Red Dragonfly set to release 28 August via The Orchard. “I’ve always loved the process of making an album, for me the time just feels completely right.”
“Red Dragonfly, to me, drifts through transformation and change, reminding me of who I truly am,” Lyn reveals. “The record moves between beginnings and endings, intertwined with each other. This is the first time I've made music and been totally aligned with how I want it to sound. This is me being the truest form of myself in 11 songs.”
Entirely composed, incredibly mature, Matilda Lyn has a real part to play as the next protagonist of the ever expanding world of intricate, textural pop music.
