Linfa Kear frees herself from the snares of regret in the whimsical “Venn Diagram”
Change is inevitable. Past lovers move on, and our faces look different ten years on. In the midst of it all, we have a choice: to live in fear and regret, or to embrace the changes and flourish. Linfa Kear chooses the latter in this reflective new song off of her debut EP.
Atop driving drums and a contemplative guitar line, Linfa takes listeners on a journey of her personal evolution in indie pop cut “Venn Diagram”. Amidst her changing appearance and tastes, she expresses an innate happiness for her past. She observes the positive changes that have happened not just for herself, but also for a past relationship. In both of these lives, gardens are growing, and rather than wish disaster upon one, Linfa relishes the joy that’s evident in both. With vivid songwriting and effortless instrumentals, Linfa is building herself up as a songwriter to watch.
“Venn Diagram” is a reminder that we can’t have it all, but that’s not a bad thing. We can still be happy as there are things that are meant just for us. “I wrote this after discovering a guy I’d dated in my early 20s was happily in a relationship,” Linfa says. “He was a guy I always thought I’d be hung up about, and instead I was really happy for him and grateful for the female relationships I’d built at that time in my early 20s. The day after finishing it though I found him on Bumble and genuinely thought I had some sort of Death Note power for a second.”
The single comes off Linfa’s debut EP How’s Your Mother, which features three other poetically-written coming-of-age tracks. While “Venn Diagram” is a vulnerable singer-songwriter piece, Linfa shows her range in other parts of her EP, flexing other indie rock and pop muscles.
“How’s Your Mother originally started as a sort of love letter to myself and my friends after recovering from a horrible relationship and accidentally acted as a turning point of how I saw myself and music,” Linfa says. “Everything I’d written before this was very serious and making this with Joe, my bestie, was wholesome and healing.”
