Daniel Kleederman's "Compromised Positions" is a sublime, guttural, vertiginous spiral into the incorporeal
Whilst you may have caught glimpses of his name already as the touring guitarist and musical director to alt-rock's favourite grisly auteur, Bartees Strange, 2025 brings a new mission for Daniel Kleederman – to release his own debut album – but with all of his usual tools - his long-standing creative partnerships, and a vice grip on his trusty guitar.
Daniel Kleederman's debut album Another Life is slated for release on April 4th and is set to chart the gut-punching dizziness, but also immutable beauty, of real-life relationships; whether the pangs of heartache and heartbreak, psychedelic epiphany, or, welcome euphoria at everyday surprises.
The first taste of the record comes in the form of "Compromised Positions", a twinkling tearjerker that spins between honey-sweet shoegaze and preposterously frenetic indie rhythms à la The National, Perfume Genius, or Ritt Momney. Speaking of the track, Kleederman muses "'Compromised Positions' is a psychological, cosmic thriller about feeling the weighty responsibility of honesty and love while caught in precarious cycles of seduction and codependency. Time, space, and truth warp throughout as the gravitational pull towards the black hole of a breakup gets stronger and stronger."
In much a similar way, the track's heavy guitar-lead production forms an earthy, vertiginous spiral sucking listeners into the slow build of its near six minute runtime. "It’s the only song on the record that went through a serious editing process," Kleederman continues, "there is an earlier version of this song that is about 8 minutes long that I may release one day."
Growing up in Massachusetts Kleederman was never far from his comfort instrument, forever listening out for his front door to swing open and latch shut so that he knew his parents had left and he could turn up his amp to play to his heart's content. His love for guitar, inspired by their penchant for The Beatles and B.B. King, has been a constant through his life. It both laid grounds for, and subsequently stabilised, the crazy around him as he met with long-term collaborators Bartees Strange and Chris Connors, the latter of whom he co-produced Another Life alongside.
It was a process that took over two years, not just chipping away at the gargantuan feat but also spurring each other on to dig deeper, turn over the stones, and have the freedom to excavate. The product is all the richer for it. A sublime, guttural, heart-bearing retelling of life's most incorporeal experiences: love and loss.
"Compromised Positions" is out now, with his debut album Another Life set for release 4 April 2025. Find Daniel Kleederman on Instagram.
