Rising artist Bellzzz’s latest single “Far Away” is an odd-pop dystopian dream
“Far Away”, the second single off of Bellzzz’s debut EP Dear Elizabeth, begins with a driving acoustic guitar and swirling synth that grumble underneath her tender vocal line. Off-kilter and mischievous, it’s Alice chasing after the rabbit, unbeknownst to the dark world she’ll soon fall into.
As it progresses, searing industrial noise and chords that crunch imbue the atmosphere, pulling Bellzzz deeper into the color and sounds she’s losing herself in. With a unique melody that slips and slides across a treble clef, Bellzzz voice soars atop this textural vortex, singing of her dream to be taken far away from all of this. Atmospheric and raw, “Far Away” comes from the same place all of Bellzzz’s songs do: her own dark wells of imagination she’s been cultivating since she was a teenager.
“From the first time I sat down to write a song when I was 13, I’ve always had this image in my head of a girl. There’s this huge story surrounding her that I have this need to tell. I call her Elizabeth,” she explains. Seven years down the line, Elizabeth remains. Now Bellzzz is ready to share her story. “This one is about wanting to escape, and wanting to prove to people that you can make something of yourself. But it’s also about Elizabeth reaching out to me; about how she no longer has a voice and wants to speak through me to tell her story.”
“Far Away” explores a need to get away, while other tracks off the EP dive into the hardships of loneliness and the tricky navigation of mental health. Inspired by artists like Tom Burton, specifically his story Coraline, it’s all centered all around Bellzzz’s own experiences, but told through the lens of Elizabeth.
“Elizabeth runs away and goes through a forest and on this massive journey through villages where she meets different people,” Bellzzz says about the EP. “The whole story explores wanting to just get away and try and find a safe space for yourself.”
"Far Away" is out now, and the Dear Elizabeth EP is out on March 29. Find Bellzzz on Instagram.
