Barny Fletcher debuts his funky ode to nightclub life with latest single "Scotch of St. James"
The new track by this burgeoning jack of all trades is a fusion of modern pop and funk genres: the result is an addictively catchy, summery sound.
London-based artist Barny Fletcher grew up in a small village in Somerset, but his influences span worldwide. From Bob Dylan to Eminem, his musical tastes and own discography features a wide scope of genres, and it’s this very musical prowess which entices his fans. You just never quite know what to expect next from this artist.
Starting out uploading weekly singles to Soundcloud, Fletcher’s insatiable appetite for music propelled him forward to explore every genre under the sun, from R&B to hip hop to rap. The young musician seems to tackle all these different genres effortlessly, too. This time, he’s experimenting with a new, addictive fusion of pop and funk sounds.
In his latest track "Scotch of St. James" Fletcher details an experience he had at the famous London nightclub of the same name. The exclusive venue might have been most prominent in the ‘60s, and now boasts a truly rich rock 'n' roll heritage, but its institutional status holds up into today continuing to inspire new faces.
“I blagged my way into 'The Scotch of Saint James' on a Saturday night. Before long, I was two feet from Virgil Abloh DJ-ing alongside Peggy Gou. I think it must have been Fashion Week because a lot of those type of characters were floating around town. I remember seeing Hailey Bieber, Winnie Harlow and Jourdan Dunn all huddled around the decks; all these supermodels shoulder to shoulder in a tiny low-lit club. It was cool,” Fletcher explained.
“I later discovered a young Jimi Hendrix played his first London show there. Paul McCartney met Stevie Wonder there. The Scotch is an institution with real music history. I was happy to have had my own experience there. And here we are. The right song came along and it felt good to write about it,” he said. The result is an infectiously upbeat track, a vivid recreation of Fletcher’s own memories of that night.
Picture sweaty clothes sticking to your skin as you move across the dance floor, body pulsating from the continuous motions, and club lights shining on the faces of strangers as celebrities moving closely around you. It’s a flirty, feel-good track, with sultry bass guitar framing Fletcher’s charismatic, confident lyrics, all backed up by a hazy synth that makes the club atmosphere all the more palpable. So, if you want to be transported to one of London’s most exclusive clubs, just take a trip to "Scotch of St. James" and see how it feels.
