Brisbane-based indie-pop songwriter Asha Jefferies unveils the new single and video of “Brand New Bitch,” a heartfelt excerpt from her debut album

Asha Jefferies is nowadays no longer the outsider with an acoustic guitar (a Fender Mustang is presently her trusty ally), as she is now supported by a full band, made-up by her close friends. “Brand New Bitch” marks a new life-chapter and musical odyssey with the same resolution that precedes her every performance, while maintaining the intimacy that’s enamoured fans over since her early songs. It marks a newfound confidence in her coming of age as a young, queer woman.

Of the accompanying video for "Brand New Bitch," Asha Jefferies said, "We shot this music video over 4 days across many locations in Meanjin leaving many passer-bys wondering - why is she wearing a bike helmet? Why is he annoying her with a balloon? Why is she being splashed with a bucket of water? The result is 'Brand New Bitch', a story of getting free and moving on."

Hailing from the Northern Rivers but raised in Brisbane, her debut album Ego Ride will be out 12th April 2024 through Nettwerk Music Group. The album will speak to an audience of listeners searching for moments of self-reflection and authenticity. To date, Asha Jefferies has toured with and supported acts including Julia Jacklin, Stella Donnelly, and has played notable Australian festival slots at BIGSOUND, Icebreaker Festival, Against the Grain, Bluesfest, Woodford Folk and Mullum Music Festivals.

"It is a story written and dedicated to my younger self, that the meter of your world will keep on running and there is hope to be had," she describes of the record. "These songs have a fundamentally ‘together’ feeling made possible by the collaboration between my band and Sam Cromack (producer and engineer of the album; of Ball Park Music). All songs were recorded live together in one room and the sound of the album shapeshifts from indie pop to piano ballad to psychedelic indie rock to folktronica."

“Brand New Bitch” was written out of an urgent desire. The song invites you into a world where the necessity of a becoming a new version of oneself is often lived with impatience. Asha plays around metaphors, but also isn’t afraid to explore her emotional duality, singing over a shiny pop song, on her journey to honesty.

"Brand New Bitch" is out now with her debut album Ego Ride set for release 12 April 2024. Find Asha Jeffries on Instagram.
