Don't kill my vibe! Sigrid storms Shepherd's Bush Empire
Having been crowned the 2018 winner of the BBC’s prestigious Sound of... poll, Sigrid creates her own articulate brand of euphoric pop while following in the footsteps of her thriving Scandinavian sisters. With only a handful of releases under her belt, a sold out crowd eagerly awaits her anthemic hits while hoping to hear new material from her highly anticipated debut album.
Sigrid strides confidently in to the sold out Shepherd’s Bush Empire and, despite being crammed into a tiny corner, it’s impossible not to be enamoured by her infectious energy. Easing us in with the unreleased track "Go To War", Sigrid leaps effortlessly across the stage. She’s sophisticated yet spritely and it’s clear that she’s got a lot to say. 2017’s "Plot Twist" sparks a sing along and, at any mention of a new song, the audience listen intently.
There’s an incredible duality to Sigrid’s inimitable voice; in equals parts her voice is delicate as well as having a brilliant bite. The newly released "Raw" is relatively relaxed compared to Sigrid’s previous singles, but just as catchy. Old hits such as "Fake Friends" are urgent, while "Dynamite" shows a new vulnerability and, within a sea of mobile phones, an adoring crowd sing supportively.
In between songs, there’s little discussion apart from the occasional earnest announcement which, at times, understate her well-deserved success: "Can I be a bit cheesy now, is that ok? A huge thank you to everyone who showed up today." However, these quiet quips are incredibly charming and add a touching authenticity to Sigrid’s seamless showcase. Finishing back to back with contagious hits "Strangers" and "Don’t Kill My Vibe", we are left with an indelible aftertaste.
Atop a pile of incredibly talented up-and-coming musicians, Sigrid sits triumphantly, waiting for inevitable chart domination. In a short but sweet set we are introduced to an endless amount of potential and it’s clear that she is an articulate and admirable star in the waiting who rise I, for one, cannot wait to see.
