Black Honey are captivating, Live in London

Last night, live in London, Brighton four-piece Black Honey flaunted the epic status of their self-titled debut album, heading up a bill that displayed the full force of what women have to offer the music industry in 2018.

With support coming from Californians RUSSO and Manchester’s PINS, the lineup was impeccably packed with female talent with the whole night becoming a sparkling celebration of feminist power.

From the moment Black Honey hit the stage, ethereal frontwoman Izzy B Phillips was like a celestial light in the darkness, purring first into album opener “I Only Hurt the Ones I Love”, before unreeling a magnificently strong set list. While the beauty of songs like “Blue Romance” show off Phillips’ flawless vocals, tracks like “Bad Friends” and “Into The Nightmare” punch with an attitude that sounded directly inherited from the likes of Debbie Harry.

From the influences of powerful frontwomen, you can also hear hints of Gwen Stefani’s No Doubt career through Phillips’ faultless voice in album track “Baby”, as with the band’s more grungy sounds that could place them very comfortably in the 90s.

Phillips remains a captivating, diverse performer with ease throughout the whole set, with the rest of the band humbly backing up her endless talent. Following the exciting displays from both of the up and coming female-led supports, tonight was powerful proof that rock is definitely no longer a man’s world, and that women are finally taking the place they deserve in the spotlight.
