We Aeronauts – Chalon Valley

Just what is an Arkestra? We Aeronauts don’t know despite being labelled an “Arkestra band” themselves. “Is it something to do with Noah?” they ask in an interview. That might not be far off the ball. With the album supposedly dying as an idea, here is band embracing the concept album and like the tale of Noah, theirs is one of vast proportions.

Written when the Oxford eight piece took a French holiday in Chalon Valley, the joyfully twee harmonies and breezy rhythms tell stories of the trip’s walks and bike rides. It does tip on a mawkishly cheesy sing-a-long at times but Chalon Valley feels diary like, open for everyone.

Closing ‘Alpe d’Huez’ is the strongest track. Its closing angelic orchestra portrays Aeronaut’s ability to bookmark between snugness and grandeur. You feel they’re still down to earth despite aiming for great heights. Even at the sight of any solemnity, there’s a hope of keeping your chin up with friends, ‘The Boatswain’s Cry’ opening its pages with harmonies reading cheerfully like I’m From Barcelona.

We Aeronauts are storytellers as much as anything. Their ability to write evocative imagery that catches you from the start is their strongest point – although ‘Fleet River’s’ tame opening fails to grab in the same way. Despite this, it’s an EP that refuses to depress. Their next journey should be an interesting one.
