"The Virgins"

Punk funk was a genre that was all about the party. I say 'was' because by the time !!! (Chk Chk Chk) released Louden Up Now in 2004, the party was already winding down and parents had begun to arrive to take their offspring home for beddy-byes. The Virgins, however, seem to have decided that this music movement had not been fully exorcised in terms of profitability and 'creativity' so have polished up the raw jump-up-and-down, beer-sweat-and-good-time vibe of that scene and released their self-titled LP for those still hanging around for the house lights come on.The Virgins is a tidy record. I mean they had a bunch of songs on US TV show Gossip Girl, plus a few other kids-acting-like-adults TV programmes. They don't let songs with anything resembling musical flabbiness onto those television networks. They have lean, athletic, attractive songs, but often these are also boring, obvious songs performed by overly styled kids and, although they aren't the worst offenders, The Virgins' music would not stick out too far from that particular pact.Musically, tracks like "Murder" have a strange, Gang Of Four feel, straining to inject some funk into the album but going too far and eventually stopping at disco. "Rich Girls" struts like a 19 year old drummer on the dance floor; confidently and half drunk, only to embarrass himself in front of the very girls he's trying to impress by dropping too much bullshit into the conversation. They group also fall into the tried and tested trap of whacking a keyboard into tunes when ideas run dry.It seems like The Virgins' music is merely an exercise in box ticking: Lyrics about sexy girls, drugs and going to hipster parties. Check. Well-referenced musical influences. Check. On-point fashion trends. Check. A humourless and short, 34 minutes.Insincerity and banality are areas that should be avoided at all costs when writing music, creating artworks or existing on this planet. They are ugly, rude beasts that can be easily spotted by the most casual of observers and if you've been alive more than 20 years, you can hear the convolution behind The Virgin's act without having to strain at all.
