The Moi Non Plus, a Guitar/Drums duo from Amsterdam, certainly do know how make a lot of noise. There is good noise, and bad noise however, you can’t just turn up your amps, thrash about on the drums and expect it to be called genius. In the way of many duos, such as the ever-mentioned White Stripes, the Moi Non Plus make a huge sound that exceeds the amount expected from just two people, although the frequent use of samples may help them along a bit.The listening experience of The Moi Non Plus was never meant to be pleasant, it was supposed to be challenging, obliterating, and bracing. It somewhat succeeds in this, but once you get past the initial enjoyment from so much aggression, there has to be something else to the music, After all Sonic Youth did what The Moi Non Plus are doing decades ago, The Moi Non Plus, and noise, is nothing new and I am no longer excited simply by the introduction of a racket.Unfortunately The Moi Non Plus do not make good noise. Songs are rarely more than a couple of notes repeated ad infinitum, with largely uninteresting lyrics shouted over the top. This is perhaps unnecessarily harsh, The Moi Non Plus do have an endearing youthful energy about them, but this cannot carry them alone. They ruin this partially by making the decision to slow down in the middle of the album, which hardly plays to their strengths at all.I don’t dislike the Moi Non Plus, I sat through their album perfectly happily, but they are simply uninspired, nothing new. There is not enough about them to create a credible band, their songs sound almost uniform and indistinguishable from each other, and all of their songs sound the same the whole way through. A bit of energy goes a long way, but it cannot completely excuse this.
