The Good The Bad – From 001 to 017

Danish based The Good The Bad make it very simple to encapsulate their sound: Wild West rock ‘n’ roll. It’s safe to say that their no-nonsense debut album From 001 to 017 is pretty one-dimensional but that’s not to say that it’s entirely a bad dimension. Far from it; how often does one hear Danish, wild-west inspired guitar rock?

From the melodies, to the gun shot ringing out at the end of the first song, and, dare I even mention the obvious, their name, this album is all about yanking on your replica Stetson and grinding your boots into the sand in time to the music. The LP is entirely instrumental (save the odd ‘woo ee oo’), never deviates from two guitars, bass and drums

Anyway, the tracks are good, on the whole. Pounding drums, jangly guitar lines and enough wannabee spaghetti western soundtracks for Ennio Morricone to shake a gnarled stick at. The main issue really is, and the same could be said for this review, once you’ve gotten through the first fifth you really won’t experience anything new. The whole album is little more than a half hour long and even though what little rhythmic variation there is (combined with what little journalistic integrity I have) was enough to hold me until the end, I just couldn’t shake the niggling feeling that with a vocalist, or with more variation in mood, The Good The Bad could really be onto something.

Like their very name then, there is just something missing to this record, and to the band in general, an expectation that is never fulfilled. I would enjoy of these songs individually but 17 in a row? Maybe live, but on record pardner? I’d rather not trade my fistful of dollars for it, no sir.
