superu_cornwallBrighton-based fivepiece Super U, in attempt to find out what's going on along the coast, present to us this EP What News From Cornwall? It seems a curious way of going about it - I didn't realise even Cornwall was that incommunicado - but let's not back off from the idea in principle. Well, Super U aren't saying a massive amount here, even by EP standards - its three songs barely cross the ten minute mark, so they'd better be good. And in a sense, they are - immaculately played and produced, that is. The trouble is that whilst these songs are very satisfying to the ear, they're just a little too... uneventful. 'The Word' may have some elegant sax and chiming acoustic guitars, but it has a tendency to just rumble along. There's really very little dynamism here, and some elements feel a little half-baked - the song's backing vocals in particular. The structure is about as simple as they come but rather than hitting hard, the chorus is barely noticeable in its arrival. It's polished run-of-the-mill, the kind of music you keep turning up hoping it'll sound more interesting, but it doesn't.The trouble is, that one of the band's permanent members is a flautist, another is a saxphonist. And rather than making integral contributions to the songs, these two feel as though they're being given fig leaf mini-parts to superficially show off their talents. If they were better amalgamated into the songs, Super U could sound far superior to their outing here.'What News From Cornwall?' itself is a little more upbeat, and benefits from that - the chorus is much more effective, and while the song's guitar and flute are as clockwork-predictable as the previous one's sax, they still complement each other well. Enjoyable but extremely unspectacular, What News From Cornwall? as a whole is pleasant enough but can run the risk of becoming tiresome, even across its unintrusively short length. 60%Super U on MySpace
