peteandthepirates_littledeathcover.jpgSo let’s get the least interesting and most obvious point out first; Little Death is the English translation of a French saying which is reference to a “sexual orgasm”. Marvellous. However, I guess that sets the tone for what to expect from Pete And The Pirates eagerly anticipated debut record. It’s full of post-pub fumbles under the sheets and all the elation and disappointment that go with it. There’s a wonderful and joyous naivety to their songs that spreads good will amongst men (and women).Recent single ‘Knots’ seems to distil all that’s great and good about this bunch of Reading reprobates; “Get out of the bed, it’s the wrong”¦ Sometimes I can’t see your face, it makes me sad” ”“ the mixture of hungover mornings with the longing for love and meaning to their adolescent lives are practically perfect. And yet”¦ and YET, their songs aren't spoilt by the cynicism of adulthood. Their naivety, which might not be actually true, is so brilliantly charming that, even if you have the coldest heart, you’ll find yourself falling for them.‘Humming’ revels in heartbreaking honesty, it’s lyrics dealing in a desperation that can’t be rectified by downing another drink: “Here come the bees they’re humming, they’re trying to tell you something, they’re dancing for you, break down and try again”. All this gently sung over a gentle drum beat and achingly simple guitars. This acts as a counterbalance to the out-and-out pop gem that is ‘Come On Feat’. A thrashing anthem that just screams “SHUT UP AND DANCE!” and brings back all those great memories about going out, talking to the opposite sex, and just having a great time.Of course, these wonderful tales of youth culture wouldn’t work if the music itself was boring. No chance of that. Sure, the hacksaw riffs do get a bit repetitive and the one from ‘Come On Feet’ turns up on at least half a dozen of the other tracks here. But let’s not worry about that. This is what music is all about; fun, enjoyment and dancing. If you listen to ‘She Doesn’t Belong To Me’ and a smile doesn’t spread across your face then give up; you’re already dead. 88%mp3:> Pete & The Pirates: “Not A Friend”
