"Rewind While Sleepy EP"

Memory Cassette are collection of musicians from the Philadelphia/Jersey area that has sprung forth from members of Hail Social and Weird Tapes, but aside from that, they pretty much remain a mystery. Their blog offers the opportunity to download both their EP's yet there are no names, no photos and no record of any live shows; whether their near clandestine character is a reminder that it should all be about the music, or whether they are just shy, I guess we will have to wait and see.The opening track, '50mph', is akin to the most recent offerings from Goldfrapp, and with such soaring whispy vocals one could almost be forgiven for thinking it was actually Alison. Yet there is a richness, depth and soul to the voice that accompanies Memory Cassette's almost folky, synth melody that means this EP doesn't become dry and repetitive. The catchy electro pop vibe and whispy vocals tuned out somewhat in 'Listen to the Vacuum' in favour of a more of a lo-fi minimalist electronica soundscape, akin to the likes of Sol Seppy, with the instrumental elements taking precedent as they guide us flawlessly into the guitar lead 'Ghost In The Boombox.' The echoing, emotive looped guitar riff and layered vocals are strikingly sublime and smooth, and yet at the same time edgy and raw. While 'Surfin' has a sensual and almost indulgent feel as the lyrics take us on a journey along a beach but the pulsating rhythm of the keys and the drums when mixed with the soft and fragile vocals make it the perfect soundtrack to a night out.Rewind While Sleepy is a blissfully hazed-out EP: a concoction of up-beat electro-pop, eighties disco and chilled-out shoegaze, it exudes the kind of dreamy, spaced-out atmosphere of a warm summers evening in the countryside. Or maybe that's just me, but it certainly is beautiful.
