Jaguar Love – Hologram Jams

I really hate writing bad reviews, especially when there are so many excellent records about. So instead of using my 400 odd word count to hack the new effort from Jaguar Love to pieces, I’ll give you a short explanation of why not to buy it, and then some exceedingly awesome alternatives.Jaguar Love are Johnny Whitney and Cody Votolato. Both used to be members of the utterly awesome Blood Brothers. Their debut record also featured Jay Clarke, formerly of the similarly awesome Pretty Girls Make Graves. Sadly Jay has now left the band, and left Johnny and Cody to a new direction they refer to as “Daft Punk meets New Order meets Black Flag”. Sadly it is none of these things.Instead Hologram Jams offers cheap synthetic beats, stitched up song construction and terribly hollow lyrics. I’m sorry but “I plug my headphones in the sewer in the street/and listen to the pulse like an 808 beat” makes me think of nothing but that recent Chipmunk song. Two songs in and all I want to do is listen to their last album. Four songs in all I want to do is listen to Blood Brothers. The continual screams of ‘Fire!’ do nothing to help this.Everything from the awful use of vocoder to the complete lack of soul within their lyrics just leaves me cold. This is less Daft Punk, more 3Oh!3. So instead, how about spending your pennies on these beauties”¦Gold Panda You This man makes noises you’d never believe existedFriendship Bracelet Club Volume 4 Brand new cassette of the brilliant and bizarre, in fact, why not buy the entire series while you’re there? The Joy Formidable Popinjay Mmmmm Sonic Youth. Mmmmm Belly. Mmmmm The Joy FormidableWeed Diamond Snowmelt Glowing fuzzed up indie from the Transparent Boys. Make sure you grab the brilliant Active Child and Perfume Genius singles too before they sell out.Rolo Tomassi Cosmology This is insanely rad. I can’t find a link for pre-order so in the meantime, here’s their 2010 singles club.
