Gosh Pith’s Josh Smith and Josh Freed grew up on everything from Jimi Hendrix to J Dilla, and it shows in their woozy Gold Chain EP, a genre-bending sludge that is built around trap drums and smoothly layered guitars.

The duo have dubbed their unique sound “cosmic-trap” and their commitment to cloaking their tunes in reverb-soaked chords is perhaps the pair’s greatest strength.

Title track “Gold Chain” is up there with 2014 single “Waves” as the group’s sleekest cut. With its spacey, vocals and Tame Impala meets Travis Scott production, “Gold Chain” proves to be the perfect 4:00am love song. Smith isn’t a phenomenal vocalist, but his voice has a pleasing cadence and his understated delivery fits the duo’s style.

The energy level gets a crank with “K9.” The chords hit harder and the drums are less of a hazy suggestion and more of a frantic skitter.

“Scoop” is maybe the best piece of songwriting on Gold Chain. Booming bass guitar compliments some fizzy fretwork on the lead, and the whole affair has a druggy Postal Service quality.

It remains to be seen if Gosh Pith’s formula can stretch to LP length, but the early returns have certainly been positive. There isn’t much sonic variety here, but this is still a young group defining their sound, and there’s an impressive amount of raw talent from these Motor City newcomers.
