"Cheer Gone"

Euros Childs – Cheer Gone

So, welcome once again to the strange world inhabited by Euros Childs. Unbelievably now on his fourth solo outing, Euros once again delivers his trademark finely crafted brand of melancholy in a mixture of English and Welsh, serving up some perfect observations on what it is to live our modern life. In harsh times, there is something comforting about hearing Child’s distinctive croon on a chilly afternoon.

However, as the title suggests, all is not necessarily well in Euros’ world. Much of the more upbeat material and humour that has scattered previous outings are absent here, a sense of loss pervading the album. The delicate twang of ‘Summer Days’ sees Childs' wishing for days gone by, in which to waste away the time. The likes of ‘My Love is Gone’ revisit the darker, more folky side of Childs' vast back catalog, and the sinister ‘Farm Hand Murder’ proves once again that he is a dab hand at the murder ballad. Sole Welsh offering ‘O Ein Dear’ continues the sombre mood, the delicate harmonies and drone like repetitions building before cutting short as the piano resonates.

That is not to say that this is a dour record however. ‘I Love Her Ways’ bounces along on a walking bass line and sweet harmonies, while the daydream like live favourite ‘Saving Up To Get Married’ imagines better times, trumpets and violins and a future in a cottage in the countryside. It is also home to one of my favourite lyrics of the year: ‘Saw her working in a cafe one day/ the way she served tea blew me away’.

The throwaway “Sing A Little Song” closes the album with a hoedown, another in a long line of Childs' tribute to pure Country, with fiddles swirling along with his doggrel lyrics about, er, singing a song. Throw away it may be, but it serves as a sweet reminder that while cheer may be gone for the time being, it won’t be long till it returns.
