Does It Offend You, Yeah? A rather clunky band name, but hey ”“ it's a quote straight out of the awkward trap of The Office's David Brent so all can be forgiven. Formed in 2006 and with remixes of such acts as Bloc Party, The Raconteurs, The White Stripes and Muse under their belts, the Reading electro-rockers are releasing their debut album You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into. DIOYY deliver with 38 minutes of excellent music that belies the flood of comparisons to Daft Punk and Justice. You Have No Idea”¦ blurs the lines between electronica, pop and rock and roll. The trio of instrumental tracks showcase the band's synthesizer skills: album opener 'Battle Royale' and single 'Weird Science' are packed with glitchy, dirty dance beats and 'Attack Of The 60 Ft Lesbian Octopus' is a two-minute-long frenzy of spaced-out synth powered by furious drumming. Recent single 'We Are Rockstars', with its dancy beat, robotic vocals, liberal cowbell and fuzzy bass will have you grooving in no time, provided you can look past the song's somewhat depressing lyrics about online networking engulfing today's society, propelling actual personal connections into obsoleteness. 'Dawn Of The Dead' and 'Epic Last Song' utilize more melody, Morgan Quaintance's vocals and catchy hooks to create a poppier effect. DIOYY show they can also rock pretty hard on 'With A Heavy Heart (I Regret To Inform You)', 'Doomed Now' and 'Let's Make Out' - featuring ex-DFA 1979-er Sebastien Grainger on Axl Rose-esque vocals. So, don't let the comparisons fool you; give this album a listen or several. DIOYY use enough synth beats, catchy guitar riffs and driving bass to produce a healthy mix of differing musical styles that goes beyond the electronica pigeonhole. I found You Have No Idea”¦ to be a bit of a grower, and am still finding more to love about the album with every spin. It doesn't hurt either that DIOYY have found the key to my heart: you can absolutely never have too much cowbell.
