Codeine Velvet Club – Codeine Velvet Club

Codeine Velvet Club knew what they wanted to sound like and by golly they’ve nail it. Big-bang brass, classic, slicked-back-hair rock’n’roll replete with semi-surf female backing vox, opener ‘Hollywood’ is a rollicking introduction to their sound; unique amongst their contemporaries though at points shamelessly retro.

Broad strokes aside, what Codeine Velvet Club very obviously succeed in is putting the pomp back in their rock without any of the cheesy power balladry of The Darkness. Instead they smack of a wonderful cross between The Raveonettes and Amy Winehouse’s backing band. This is none more evident than on ‘Vanity Kills’, where the jazzy female fox of Lou Hickey take a more central role shored up by the basso rumble of tubas, and the almost sing-song chorus set to violin trills and a sumptuous arrangement.
