Blondes – Touched

Brooklyn? These guys are from Brooklyn? They sound far more like they are from one of Saturn’s many moons. With an EP that opens like a mainframe booting-up on a once-thought-lost space station; re-discovered years in the future and powered on in an attempt to understand what happened after it fell into the black hole. Its throbbing digital heart once again pumping life into corroded circuits, as huge spooling tapes struggle to spin and lights flicker through layers of grime and dirt. Brooklyn? Yeah?

As debut EP’s go Blondes is an ambitious beast, it’s certainly longer than many albums and achieves far more than just a whetting of the appetite for their future wares. Touched is a body of work that comfortably stands alone, it is both cohesive in its content but also consistent in quality. Everything is built around a clinically precise orbiting central core of rhythm, but it spins with such decisive force that all manner of sounds are hurled from the nucleus.

Sometimes decimated ghost-like voices emerge from nowhere, snippets of conversations carried on the solar winds arriving garbled and incomplete, generating more questions than they answer. Elsewhere wraithlike voices sing like sirens, drawing all who listen further in. But it is this collision between man and machine that generates the magic – when the dub beats, mechanical buzzing and angelic harmonies merge it’s a euphoric experience. But joy isn’t the only emotion on offer – mystery, malice and mayhem are also expertly conveyed as the journey continues.

Touched constructs an elaborate universe that is a pleasure to traverse. If the last interstellar excursion you loved was Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld, you’ll need little persuasion to strap on your goggles, beam on-board the USS Blondes and become that space cadet all over again.
