Yoo Doo Right, Population II, and Nolan Potter detail new improvised album

14 August 2025, 13:07 | Written by Lucy Niederman

Experimental Montréal bands Yoo Doo Right and Population II have collaborated with Austin-based multi-instrumentalist Nolan Potter on a new full-length album released next month via Mothland and Levitation / The Reverberation Appreciation Society.

The full 43-minute record was created in a two-hour session with nearly ninety percent of the material being improvised. Recorded in March this year at Rundown Audio in East Austin, Texas, during SXSW, the session brings together John Talbot (drums), Justin Cober (electric guitar, synthesizers), Nolan Potter (flute, saxophone, percussion, 12-string acoustic guitar, electric guitar, organ), Pierre-Luc Gratton (percussion, vocals), Sébastien Provençal (bass), and Tristan Lacombe (12-string electric guitar, organ, signal generator).

Known for his work with Nolan Potter’s Nightmare Band, the progressive rock musician has toured nationally with appearances at Levitation, Treefort, Milwaukee Psych Fest, and SXSW. Population II, whose 2025 album Maintenant Jamais was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize, blends heavy psychedelic rock with jazz influences, while Yoo Doo Right’s influence on the record merges their signature sound of post-rock and krautrock, with a touring history across Canada, the US, and Europe.

The five-track album features "Cavelier (We’re Going Down)," “Golfe du Mexique,” “Ralliement,” “La Perla,” and “Z. (The Alley Watcher)," combining elements of krautrock, free jazz, and noise.

Several of the album's song titles reference the expeditions of a French explorer whose journey ended in mutiny."

Yoo II avec Nolan Potter is released on 12 September 2025 via Mothland & Levitation / The Reverberation Appreciation Society
