Wiley stripped of MBE for anti-semitic comments online
Following a string of anti-semitic comments posted online, four years ago, Wiley has been stripped of his MBE.
Back in 2017, Prince William honoured Wiley as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his services to music. In 2010, he posted a string of anti-semitic comments online, and was subsequently banned on Twitter and Instagram. Shortly after this, he apologised for “generalising and going outside of the people who I was talking to within the workspace and workplace I work in,” following a dispute with his Jewish manager, who eventually dropped him.
Four years later, BBC reports that Wiley has lost his MBE, and joins former MBEs such as Rolf Harris, Jimmy Savile, and Robert Mugabe, as per Stereogum.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism shared a statement, which reads: "Today’s decision marks the culmination of nearly four years of dogged perseverance. We have worked tirelessly to ensure that Wiley faces ruinous consequences for his unhinged antisemitic tirade, for which he has shown no remorse. Antisemitism has no place in the arts, and is unbecoming of anyone holding an honour. We commend the Honours Forfeiture Committee for using its powers to hold Wiley to account. In doing so, it is declaring that anti-Jewish racists cannot be role models in our society."
