Welsh quartet Slate announce new EP with music video shot in remote cottage
Cardiff post-punk quartet Slate have detailed their second EP, The Grandfather Clock, due on 22 January 2027 via Brace Yourself Records. The title track "The Grandfather Clock" is out now with a video shot in the village of Trellech.
The four-track EP follows the band’s 2024 debut Deathless. It was recorded live at RAK Studios and Perryvale Studios in London with producer Richie Kennedy. The title track is set to a video directed by Aled Victor and Sam Stevens, shot at Bryn Eglur in Trellech.
Slate – vocalist Jack Shephard, bassist and vocalist Lauren Edwards, drummer Raychi Bryant, and guitarist Louie Lane – said the EP is built around a narrative set in the house of an older relative who has passed. Four objects form the structure of the EP: "Lantern", "Tapestri", "The Pond", and "The Grandfather Clock". Founding guitarist Elis Penri also contributes guitar across the EP.
The band said the narrative “takes you on a journey through the house where you encounter four objects that propel nostalgia and bring back the memories of that person”. Additionally, they “felt more inclined to lean into aspects of our Welshness such as choral singing, poetry and folk-like melodies” than in the pas, combining those with their droney, dark goth-pop sound.
The cover art uses an old photo of Edwards’ grandfather and great-aunt outside their house in the Rhondda valley, where Edwards’ father worked as a coal miner. The EP will be released on 12-inch vinyl via Dinked’s Early Doors series.
