Watch Truman Sinclair take on "Jackson" for Best Fit's secret sessions at End of the Road
It's no easy feat to cover a stone cold classic but Capitol Records-signed folk/country upstart Truman Sinclair won over the crowd at this year's End of the Road Festival with a neat take on Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash's "Jackson".
Sinclair has been playing in bands since he was eight – beginning in the emo and metal scenes of Chicago – before moving to Los Angeles six years later where he fell in love with folk music and songwriting. As the frontman of cult farwest emo band Frat Mouse, he released four albums and played over 300 shows but recording Frat Mouse and local LA artists led Sinclair to pursue engineering and production alongside his own music.
"It's the first time I've ever played this live if you can believe it," said Sinclair. The song – which you can watch below – was part of Best Fit's secret sessions, which also saw performances from The Orchestra (For Now),Throwing Muses, Silver Gore, Tyler Ballgame, Jake Xerxes Fussell, The Sophs, Ellie O Neil, Man/Woman/Chainsaw, jasmine.4.t, Lily Seabird, and Stewart Lee with Black Country, New Road.
Sinclair's homemade solo album American Recordings dropped back in February and stood out as one the year's best debuts. Now signed to Interscope, he released new single "Sugar" last week and is currently in the midst of a hotly tipped residency at Los Angeles’ iconic Silverlake Lounge. Next year he'll return to the UK to play The Great Escape.
Best Fit's secret sessions have become a key part of End of the Road each year, bringing together artists from across the line-up in a series of short sets, exlusive cover, collaborations, and live interviews and Q&As. Past guests have included Lucy Dacus, St Vincent, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Moses Sumney, Laura Marling, Patti Smith, and Frightened Rabbit - who played a now iconic version of "The Modern Leper".
