The Tallest Man On Earth announces new album, Just Beyond Endless Mountain
The Tallest Man On Earth — the project of singer-songwriter Kristian Matsson — has revealed plans for his upcoming album, Just Beyond Endless Mountain, and shared new single, "Deliver Me from Trying".
Just Beyond Endless Mountain follows Matsson's return to his native town of Dalarna in central Sweden. During that time, he began to revisit sounds that he left behind as he became known as a contemporary folk figure, bringing old field recordings and the sounds of the local traditions into the new songs.
New single "Deliver Me from Trying" arrived organically for Matsson, as he explains, "When I listened back to it, I thought, 'Yeah... okay. Good job, Kristian. You didn't really know what you were doing there.' Deliver Me from Trying—just let me stop trying. That line just appeared, and it wasn't until later that I realized what it meant. It says a lot about where I was at."
Dalarna is known as Sweden's "cultural heartland", where locals often return to in order to reconnect with their past due to its heavy folk presence and natural spaces with fiddlers and folk dancers, timber cabins and Midsummer poles. Matsson had avoided the influence of Swedish folk music, finding himself more enmeshed in American blues and folk music, which would lead to extensive touring schedules and eventually a move to America. Eventually he stopped moving, started a garden, bought shares in horses, and started playing the fiddle — an instrument he'd had a complicated relationship with since he was a child.
"Somewhere along the way I'd developed this immature aversion to the whole cultural inheritance I grew up with," Matsson explains. "But now I live here again. I've read an incredible amount — not just about the music, but about how people actually lived in the old days. I think that's part of why this record feels more like me than anything I've made before."
