Watch The Sophs cover Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young for Best Fit's secret sessions at End of the Road

Tackling "Ohio" – one of the greatest protest songs of all time during their pop-up set at last year's End of the Road Festival – Rough Trade-signees The Sophs turned in one of the more memorable covers of the weekend for Best Fit's secret sessions.

Introducing the Crosby Stills, Nash & Young song, The Sophs' frontman Ethan Ramon quipped: "Fuck RFK Jnr, RIP Francois Hardy!" as his bandmate's effortlessly played out a neat 90-second take on the classic song.

"Ohio" was written by Neil Young in reaction to the Kent State massacre in May 1970 which took place during a rally on the Kent State University campus in Kent, Ohio, opposing the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War into Cambodia by US military forces. The Ohio National Guard opened fire on a crowd of protestors, killing four unarmed college students and wounding nine more. The shootings affected public opinion at an already socially contentious time over the role of the US in the Vietnam War.

Young wrote the lyrics to "Ohio" after seeing photos of the incident in a copy of LIFE Magazine. The song ended up as one of the band's signature songs and was selected as the 395th Greatest Song of All Time by Rolling Stone in 2010, a year after it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

The cover was part of a secret session by the band for Best Fit's at last September's End of the Road Festival, which also saw pop-up sets from The Orchestra (For Now), Throwing Muses, Truman Sinclair, Squid, Tyler Ballgame, Jake Xerxes Fussell, Ellie O'Neill, Man/Woman/Chainsaw, jasmine.4.t, Lily Seabird, and Stewart Lee with Black Country, New Road.

The Sophs – who famously signed to Rough Trade after Ramon sent a demo to the label and got a call back from founders Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee the next day – kick off a European tour with its UK leg on 16 April in Bristol, with a London show on 22 April at the 100 Club - check out the full list of dates over on their Instagram.

Best Fit's secret sessions have become a key part of End of the Road each year, bringing together artists from across the line-up in a series of short sets, exclusive covers, collaborations, and live interviews and Q&As. Past guests have included Lucy Dacus, St Vincent, Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Moses Sumney, Laura Marling, Patti Smith, and Frightened Rabbit - who played a now iconic version of "The Modern Leper".

End of the Road returns this autumn for its 20th anniversary edition, with headliners Pulp, Mac DeMarco, CMAT, Super Furry Animals, Fat Dog, Kurt Vile and one super-secret name yet to be revealed.

Final tickets for End of the Road Festival – which runs from 3-6 September 2026 – are on sale now from endoftheroadfestival.com
