A year after signing with 4AD, Meg Remy brings her U.S. Girls project to East London.
Continuing her World tour that has seen stops in Japan, New Zealand, Belgium and France, Remy is joined by collaborator and vocalist Amanda Crist. There are no guitars, no drums, no keyboards, just a tape machine and sampler backed by a homemade banner with the promoter's name ‘Upset The Rhythm’ written in hostile black paint.
Remy and Crist hold power stances front and center of the stage as they charge through songs from last year’s excellent Half Free like a car without any breaks.
Towards the end of the show, the politicized and volatile nature of the performance is contextualised, as Remy uses her first and only spoken words to the audience to discuss the recent Panama Papers data leak:
“We have one final message. Have you heard about the Panama Papers? In Iceland they did it right [referencing the resignation of Iceland’s Prime Minister], I hope for the same for you here. It’s all right there. We’re being fucked over”.
As the crowd begins to stir, Remy finishes with “It’s OK, we’ll be angry for you”, before launching into "New Age Thriller".
