The Morning After: Twin Shadow celebrates Independence Day in London
Off the back of Twin Shadow‘s brand new second album Confess, the oft-forgotten Camden sweat box Dingwalls was heaving last night. The heavy, oppressive air was quickly justified by George Lewis Jr and his band – and it is him with a backing band, rather than a group, whatever the billing – as they delivered a thrilling set. It feels only right that Lewis Jr remains the focal point of the piece because boy has he matured into as charismatic, compelling frontman?!
Barely recognisable from the charming but relatively lacklustre offering two years ago the new material is immediately, immeasurably more dynamic and irresistibly euphoric. They managed to overcome the ludicrously bass-heavy PA with a full sound that was at times overwhelming: tight, funky and frenetic. An epic ode to the 4th of July in the cover of Tom Petty’s ‘American Girl’, which did at one point descend into Star Spangled Banner, was a unique way to the end the night.
