Riding high on the success of his eighth solo record, Scottish semi-legend Edwyn Collins turned in a compelling performance at London’s Union Chapel last night.
With a set that drew from this year’s Understated album with some old favourites thrown in, Collins brought the supportive (seated) full house to their feet more than once. The new material – including standout single ‘Dilemma’ - was bolstered by an appearance from Collins’ son William (who also performed as support with his own band Bullies).
The seminal Orange Juice post-punk anthem ‘Rip it Up’ sounded as fresh as the day it was released with the wickedly funny Collins joking heavily about the days when he used to appear in the singles chart.
Understated is out now via Collins’ own AED label. He plays St George’s Church in Brighton tonight.
