The History of Apple Pie serve up a slice of sweet fuzz-pop at The Art School, Glasgow
Amid the accusations of borrowed nostalgia and that divisive name, what goes relatively unnoticed is just how good The History of Apple Pie are as a live act, as was proven last night in Glasgow.
The London five-piece just released their debut album, Out of View, on Monday and on the back of this performance they should dismiss any fears that they’re an overtly-twee bunch. Throughout the show, the band’s three-pronged guitar attack gave plenty of muscle to back up the sweet harmonies of singer-guitarist Stephanie Minn and bassist Kelly Owens. Comparisons to feedback-ophiles such as Dinosaur Jr and My Bloody Valentine are often wide of the mark (although closing song ‘Before You Reach the End’ did end in a pleasing squall of noise), it’s more bands like Lush and – on occasions – new shoegazers Asobi Seksu that Apple Pie are most reminiscent of.
Highlights were the always-wonderful fuzzy pop rush of ‘Mallory’ and ‘Long Way To Go’, the choppy chug of ‘The Warrior’ and the bass thud of ‘Do It Wrong’, in what was a fine show to celebrate the release of their debut album. Oh, and killer fringes – the lot of ‘em.
