Rae Morris headlines London's Wilton's Music Hall
In support of her forthcoming EP, Do You Even Know?, Rae Morris delivered a set to a sold out Wilton’s Music Hall last night, showcasing a handful of new tracks.
The 21 year-old Blackpudlian has been carefully honing her craft for the past three years, and has stepped things up in 2014 with the release of “Skin” and a featuring slot on Bombay Bicycle Club’s latest. As one of the city’s lesser-known music venues, the 19th century hall provided a special atmosphere for the show.
Accompanied by a three-piece band, her songs come to life in the live setting, lead by a characteristic and powerful vocal. “Closer”, which appears early in the piece, is a radio-ready pop hit as Morris cries out the earworm of a chorus above funky, staccato accompaniment.
Elsewhere more poignant songwriting nous takes over and juxtaposed these upbeat outings: stripping-back to simply piano, touching ballad “This Time” gave the striking voice (with similarities to London Grammar’s Hannah Reid) room to pour out over the silent hall.
With an album due via Atlantic in September, Morris seemingly has everything in place to immerse a wide range of music lovers and nestle neatly into the right side of mainstream.
