Laura Mvula captivates a lucky handful at Black's Member's Club
The Golden Slipper showcases are known by a select number of observant music lovers in the Capital; Blacks Members Club has provided an unbeatably intimate setting for the likes of Jens Lekman, Lucy Rose and Luke Sital-Singh in recent months, and last night Laura Mvula was added to this list of strikingly talented singer-songwriters.
Squashed into the small Dickensian room, Laura, accompanied by wonderful musicians from her band (complete with brother and sister on cello and violin respectively), had the lucky few entirely captivated for the short, but intensely sweet set. The effortless warmth of her vocal is backed up, not only by the depth of harmony created by the “mmm’s” and “aahs” from the aforementioned backing, but by the quality of her song-writing and ear-catching chord progressions. The performance really was faultless and, thanks to the setting, showcased Laura’s completely natural ability in its element.
Although the harmony and gentle crescendo of ‘She‘ was a definite highlight, ‘Let Me Fall‘ displayed funky versatility, before the genuinely tear-jerking encore ‘Diamonds‘ induced more than appropriate “spine-tingling” cliches. An exceptional talent then, with an extremely bright future and seen-to-be-believed live voice.
