Following the recent release of their debut album Down Like Gold, brothers Michael and David and Champion – aka Champs – are greeted by a warm reception as they come on stage at North London’s Lexington. “This is the first time we’ve not been a support act” introduces Michael, with an endearing bashfulness that’s present throughout the performance.
Opening the set with the humming organ and melancholy harmonies of “Too Bright To Shine” have the audience captivated instantly, and although nerves are running high with the effect is not as highly polished as on the record, the quality of the song writing shines through. Some of the more delicate, songs alluding to older folk influences in the Neil Young vein as well as their clever intertwining melodies that instantly bring Fleet Foxes to mind. They slot nicely in between their more pop inspired tracks, such as “Savannah” with its catchy piano riff and anthemic guitar parts.
There’s an innocent and nostalgic feel that runs throughout that makes them charming to watch and the songs are accessible and engaging; a promising start for Champs before they set out on the road for the festival season.
