The internet has very mixed reactions to Charli xcx's new song "Rock Music"

A few hours ago Charli xcx "went electric" with her new single "Rock Music"; the internet has thoughts.

Produced by brat boardsmen A.G. Cook and Finn Keane, the barely two-minute-long track is led by fizzing synths and flanging guitars. It's a change of pace compared to Charli's previous work. "Now we're making rock music!" she declares as cymbals crash in the chorus.

"bruh wtf is the new charli xcx song this is some of the worst shit i've ever heard," wrote @nosebleedjesus on X/Twitter.

Also on X, @moneyisagun posted a screenshot of a "sincere letter" signed by "Disappointed Fans". With many tell-tale signs of having used AI, the letter laments that "Rock Music" is "not experimentation — it's calculation. Not rebellion — the aesthetic of rebellion." Read the full letter below.

Over on Reddit, one user, Blvd_Nights, wrote, "the most PC Music thing she's ever done in her entire career. close enough, welcome back 2014." While u/tokengaymusiccritic asked, "Am I crazy for thinking this might be a bit?" Many responders agreed it was, in fact, a bit.

However, in February, Charli shared her companion album for Emerald Fennell’s film adaptation of Wuthering Heights, which featured guest contributions from John Cale and Sky Ferreira. She also told Pitchfork contributor Laura Snapes in a new British Vogue cover story, "I think the dance floor is dead."
