The Golden Dregs announce fifth album UK Gothic and share new single
Peckham goth rockers The Golden Dregs have announced their fifth studio album, UK Gothic, due for release on 29 January via Joy of Life International. The announcement arrives with new single “Real thing”, which premiered on BBC 6 Music with Huw Stephens and was co-written with Ash's Tim Wheeler.
UK Gothic marks a new era for the band, following their departure from their previous label and the establishment of Joy of Life International, an imprint of End of The Road Records. The record was written and recorded with a focus on speed and spontaneity, with the band learning and tracking the entire album live in three days. “What you hear on the record is probably on average the fifth time they’d played the song together,” explained bandleader Benjamin Woods.
The album draws on everything from Leonard Cohen’s 80s output to Falmouth's rural coastlines to the romantic visions of William Blake, whose artwork features on the album cover. Speaking about the single, Woods said: “It’s a different direction for the band. The song is exploding with energy and rubble and bloodlust and passion. The story is of a romance in amongst a group of radicals taking matters into their own hands.”
The band have also announced a headline show at London’s St. Pancras Old Church on 29 April.
