Taylor Swift fans raise thousands for family of young man killed after Houston gig
Jacob Lewis was killed by a suspected drunk-driver after a hit-and-run incident on 21 April.
The 20-year-old and his sister, April Bancroft, were driving back from Taylor Swift’s show at Houston’s NGR Stadium when they ran into car trouble. Jacob had stepped out of the car and started to push it from behind when suspect Alan Hayes drove into him. Hayes, who was suspected of being intoxicated, fled the scene before eventually being arrested. Unfortunately Lewis died at the scene.
A GoFundMe page was set up after Lewis died, and over £100,000 has been donated to “honour the memory of [Jacob] by raising money for flowers, funeral costs and scholarships". Many people have donated $13 (£10) to the fundraising campaign in honour of Swift’s favourite number.
Whilst Swift fans have shared the post widely, allowing it to raise more than their target, the GoFundMe was set up by another tight knit community. "As the Pokémon Community of Houston, we are raising funds in honor of Jacob Lewis. He is the son of Steve Lewis, a prominent leader within the Houston Pokémon scene."
Taylor Swift was recently joined on stage by Aaron Dessner in Tampa, Florida to perform "mad woman".
