Steve Lacy accidentally drops Spider-Man: Brand New Day spoiler on red carpet

It seems that Lacy has been caught up in a web of internet drama after the slip-up, which took place on Monday night.

Lacy's song "oh yeah?", from his recently released album of the same name, features in the film. While walking the red carpet (or in this instance, blue carpet) at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, he was interviewed by streamer Valkyrae on the event's official livestream. During the interview, he was asked — notably, "without spoiling anything" — to name which character he was most excited to see in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

"Jean. I like Jean. She's the villain, but there's a reason to her madness. I like her. I like her character," Lacy replied. Valkyrae then asked if he revealed a spoiler, to which he reiterated, "I like her. I like her character. I don't know why."

The clip quickly made the rounds on social media, with fans concluding that "Jean" was referring to X-Men mutant "Jean Grey", confirming speculation that the character would be played by Sadie Sink — with her casting in the film first revealed last year.

Fans were fast to respond to Lacy's blunder, with some expressing their annoyance with the casual spoiler, while others insisted that they knew it all along. Some even questioned whether he's even seen the film, and that he's simply playing into speculation. Whatever the case may be, spoilers are nothing new when it comes to the Spider-Man rollouts, as Tom Holland — the leading man himself — has become known to drop tidbits of information about Marvel films ahead of their release. Luckily, fans eager to know the truth only have to wait a few more days, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to land in theatres worldwide on 31 July.
