Sports Team robbed at gunpoint at start of US tour: "They can't take our ability to play rock songs"
Yesterday afternoon, just as they were due to kick of their North American tour, Sports Team have shared that they were robbed at gunpoint.
Taking to their socials, they shared a statement: "Just been robbed at gun point 10 minutes into the US tour. Stopped for coffee. Man runs in saying some guys are smashing into a van. Ran out to try to stop it and find masked guys ransacking the van. Start yelling and they pull out a gun. Police response was “submit an online report.” Lost a lot of personal gear, but they didn’t get the instruments so driving on to Sacramento to play tonight. They can take our Nintendo Switches but they can never take our ability to play rock songs about motorways. In all seriousness pretty shocking how resigned everyone seemed to be to it. “It happens”. 9am at some petrol station Starbucks. Wild."
As the band stopped for breakfast at a Starbucks in Vallejo, California, their van was broken into, and personal items such as film cameras, laptops, passports, and journals were stolen, as well as their suitcases containing all of their clothes. Luckily, their instruments were in a separate part of the van, locked away.
The band were on their way to Sacramento to play the first show on the North American tour. They had to cancel the first night of the tour, in San Francisco, due to flight cancellations and delays. Despite the robbery, they'll return to the area next week for shows in San Diego and Los Angeles. "We're gonna keep playing," vocalist Alex Rice said to BBC. "We've got nothing against the Bay Area. We think it's great here - but it's sad that it's kind of got to this sort of place with gun violence."
