'Slushy psychedelia' newcomers Captain Crocodile are back with a new single, "Fragmented Tool"

Prolific Sheffield-Liverpool slowcore outfit Captain Crocodile have released a new single, “Fragmented Tool”, off the back of a string of EPs. They say it marks a return to the project’s bread-and-butter roots in alternative-electronica.

The core duo of Jack Norrie and Raye Osterloh have built a quiet following for their blend of lo-fi rock, psychedelia, and shoegaze across compact self-released EPs like Fums Down, CROCTRASH, Moon Presence, Soft Crust, and Stepped On Me. With “Fragmented Tool”, they pull the tempo down and lean into atmosphere: a vibrato guitar line and a spectral opening melody. They cite Duster, Sign Crushes Motorist, and King Krule as reference points, and got Casual Blood Service - a lofi project out of Washington state - to feature on the track, lending airy backing vocals.

Captain Crocodile’s past work has earned playlist placements and opening slots for acts including Nightbus, La Sécurité, Stealing Sheep, Drahla, STONE, and Bilk. Norrie and Osterloh developed the new single themselves, drawing on a palette of slowcore, lo-fi psychedelia and indie rock. They also make homemade animated visualisers and album art. Live, they play as a five-piece band.
