Skepta Presents MAINS radio show launches on Apple Music 1
British artist and fashion designer Skepta has announced Skepta presents MAINS – a new radio special airing on Apple Music 1 celebrating UK Garage and club culture.
“I wanted to bring the music that's inspired my new collection to life and get into this UK Garage, Jungle, Rave world of SK. We're going to get into talking about the history of fashion and music, and where that joins and where they meet in London,” Skepta says.
Elaborating on his key fashion look in his early raving days, Skepta reveals how he used to wear his father’s shoes and even took a shirt from his dry cleaners. He said: “I was a kid. A typical night for SK, I'm putting on my dad's shoes, I'm putting on these fake Moschino jeans that I bought off the man that came in the escort, the black escort, around the ends. I got a Moschino shirt, this is crazy I'm admitting this on camera, that I stole out of a dry cleaners. It's all coming out. If you lost your cats and dogs Moschino shirt back in the day, it was me. And I'll pay you back, I'm so sorry, but I love that shirt and I saw it when I was taking my rubbish shirt in the dry cleaners and I came back for it.
I'm going out, watching over my shoulder in case the guy whose shirt it is don't catch me. Then I'm getting to the door, heart's beating crazy, it's either I'm getting embarrassed or I'm getting in. So, I'm fighting to get in, I looked the part, I get in. I probably got just about enough money for two drinks. So I've copped one, I get into the mood, copped my second one, it's for the look. The first one's to drink, the second one's for the look.”
The two-hour radio special airs today (Thursday 18th September) at 3pm BST ahead of the unveiling of Skepta’s third collection for his fashion brand MAINS, with a show at London Fashion Week this weekend. The radio special features a selection of music that has inspired Skepta’s new collection - including classic Garage tracks by artists including MJ Cole, C.J. Bolland, Zed Bias, So Solid Crew, Heartless Crew, The Streets, Roy Davis Jr., and DJ Luck & MC Neat - as well as an in-depth discussion about the clothes clubbers wore to raves in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. In the show Skepta wears a special pair of headphones - Custom Beats Studio Pro designed by Skepta for MAINS - which will be a part of his fashion show this Saturday.
Guests on the show include pioneering Heartless Crew MC, Bushkin, and stylist Rhiannon Isabel, who together with host Skepta discuss music and fashion, share their early clubbing stories, the venues where they loved to rave, and the music’s enduring cultural impact.
