
Shakira to face second investigation over tax fraud
Almost a year on from the initial investigation, Shakira is under fire for the second time, on a brand new claim of tax fraud.
Back in July 2022 it was revealed that a Spanish prosecutor was looking to ask a court to give Shakira an eight-year prison sentence over a tax fraud case, where the Colombian star is accused of not paying taxes in Spain between 2012 and 2014.
She responded to these claims later that year, in an interview with ELLE, stating that the accusations are "false" and she's "paid everything they claimed I owed."
It has now been revealed that a Spanish judge has agreed with state prosecutors to probe two possible cases of tax fraud by Shakira from 2018. Both cases are being handled by a court in the town of Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona.
The Associated Press reports that Shakira’s PR team, Llorente y Cuenca, shared a statement which said that she “always acted in concordance with the law and on the advice of her financial advisers. They also added that Shakira is yet to receive notification of the second probe. “(Shakira) is now focused on her artistic career in Miami and is calm and confident that she will receive a favourable resolution of her fiscal issues,” they said.
Shakira is yet to give a statement following this second accusation of tax fraud.
