Seu Jorge teams up with Beck, Marisa Monte and Maria Rita for new record The Other Side

The 11-track LP, produced by Mario Caldato Jr., has been in development since 2009 — a timeline Jorge describes as a deliberate act of restraint. "Above all, this album represents patience... a great deal of patience not to give in to the urge to release it too soon, but to wait until it was truly ready," the Brasilian singer-songwriter says.

The record marks a tonal departure for Jorge, who has built his reputation across samba, funk and MPB, with a move into territory shaped by jazz, bossa nova and orchestral music, drawing on touchstones including Milton Nascimento, Arthur Verocai, and the c catalogue. The result, according to the artist, has a cinematic quality baked in from the start. "From the very first recording, it was clear that this album had a cinematic character," Jorge explains. "The idea that these songs could exist within a film helped define the entire direction."

Among the new record's tracks, "Vento de Maio," a song associated with Lô Borges and Elis Regina, features Maria Rita, while Beck joins Jorge on a version of Nick Drake's "River Man." Belgian collective Zap Mama appears on "Far From The Sea."

Monte's influence on the record runs deeper than her guest credit: Jorge explains he used her as a kind of creative benchmark throughout. "At many moments, I would think: 'If it were Marisa, what would she do here?' That helped me simplify ideas and search for more essence." He describes Monte and Antunes as "major references — not only artistically, but in the way they think about and build a career."

The Other Side follows Baile à la Baiana, released earlier in 2025 and Jorge describes this new collection of songs as the most complete statement of his career to date: "Perhaps this is the album that best explains what Seu Jorge is. In terms of music, care, and time invested... I'm certain it's the best work I've ever done."
