Sari Lightman reveals plans for Meg Duffy-produced debut album, The Way I Saw You
Canadian folk artist Sari Lightman has announced her debut solo album, The Way I Saw You, and released title track "The Way I Saw You".
Known for forming one half of experimental folk duo Lightman Sisters (formerly known as Tasseomancy, Lightman & Lightman) alongside her twin sister Romy, Lightman is shedding the experimental layer with her solo work to follow the folk tradition of artists such as Leonard Cohen, Bridget St John, and John Prine.
Lead single and title track "The Way I Saw You" introduces the work with an interaction between a journalist and writer Eve Babitz several years into an accident that left her disfigured, as she expresses her desire to be remembered as the carefree character captured in her writing.
The Way I Saw You was produced by Lightman's close friend and collaborator Meg Duffy (Hand Habits, Perfume Genius), inspired by walks through their Los Angeles neighbourhood. The album features additional contributions from bassist Pat Kelly (Perfume Genius, St Vincent), synthesist Aaron Otheim (Mega Bog), percussionist Jesse Quebbeman-Turley (Buck Meek, Cherry Glazer), and drummer Evan Cartwright (Cola, U.S. Girls), with Philip Weinrobe (Adrianne Lenker, Florist) on mixing.
Speaking about the album, Lightman says: "These songs are my attempt to draw a silhouette — a figure of a person that feels momentary and intimate.; a casual slice of life that my favorite songs are drawn from.”
