Sarah Meth details debut album, Something Shameful

Something Shameful will be released via Meth’s own imprint, Wishbone. The album is inspired by her relationships and encounters during a trip to New York in 2024, following her first major UK tour supporting King Krule.

Lead single "Don't Touch Me You're My Hero" sees Meth offer her take on the experiences of women in the music industry, and is accompanied by a video featuring Charlie Forbes of Shame, and Louis O'Bryen and Lincoln Barrett of Sorry.

"It's a bleak time for women in creative industries whether you're an artist or working behind the scenes," Meth says of the track. "Sometimes it feels like the culture around music doesn't seem to be improving, and young female musicians aren't protected enough. This song speaks to my frustration at that situation. Turning uncomfortable feelings and situations into something I can be playful with gives me a sense of agency."

The album was recorded between 4AD's London studio with in-house engineer Fabian Prynn, and Meth’s South London bedroom on a laptop with O'Bryen. Meth wrote, produced and mixed the most of the songs on her own, drawing on a strong community of artists and musicians through her own curated Wishbone nights, which have seen her perform with collaborators including Black Country, New Road’s Tyler Hyde Mary In The Junkyard, My New Band Believe and former Black Midi member Cameron Picton, and Wing!.

Delving into the inspiration behind Something Shameful, Meth explains, "A guy had invited me to go to New York but then he bailed, so I thought 'fine, I'll do it by myself. I ended up meeting so many people that week who became, at different points over the years, main characters in my life. It was special being somewhere new, meeting that version of myself outside of London."

Ahead of the album's release, Meth will play UK dates with Lowertown and Mary In The Junkyard, and has announced an appearance at Pitchfork London in November.
