Ruby Doomsday return with "Puff of Smoke" single and VHS road movie music video
The coolest-named band in South London, Ruby Doomsday, have returned with a new single and accompanying VHS video. "Puff of Smoke", recorded with Her's producer, is out now ahead of the band's George Tavern show on 24 October.
The "apocalyptic doo-wop" duo of Courtney McMahon and Joey Julliard said the new single, their third, is about the moment after the credits roll and you've driven off into the sunset.
“The song is inspired by that mad scene at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey where he drives into the black hole. I've always been obsessed with that bit, probably cos I don't understand it. I don't think you're meant to. It's like a visual representation of the great unknown - the moments after the end," said Joey Julliard, one half of the band, who also plays with Swim Deep and FUR.
The duo paired the song - which puts lofi tape loops and accordion drones in conversation with upbeat glam-pop - with a music video shot on VHS. It was recorded and produced by Saam Jafarzadeh (Her’s, Brad Stank) at Dean Street Studios.
The band play The George Tavern on 24 October and The Old Blue Last on 5 November. They recently toured the UK a support for Nature TV, and Wet Leg chose their debut single "Blood and Thunder" to play before each show on their Moisturizer world tour.
