Roy Montgomery and Martha Skye Murphy team up on new album, Nebular
New Zealand composer and guitarist Roy Montgomery and London-based vocalist and songwriter Martha Skye Murphy have revealed the plans for their upcoming collaborative album, Nebular, and shared lead single, "Cloudburst".
The new work emerges from a longstanding creative relationship between Montgomery and Murphy, who first connected when Murphy included one of Montgomery's songs on a mixtape. Montgomery went on to feature on Murphy's 2024 album Um, released via AD 93 while Murphy joined Montgomery during his Cafe OTO residency in 2023. "Cloudburst" arrives as the first preview of the collection of songs, alongside visuals by Irish artist Simon English.
The album was created entirely through remote communication between the pair, who exchanged stems of ideas over e-mail and wrote and responded to each other's messages at different times of day. Speaking about the connection behind Nebular, Murphy says, “Roy and I have a shared vernacular in the music we make together; a kind of sonic sign language, which allows us to communicate without ever really explaining the material to one another. I see our collaboration as a continuously unravelling piece of string; one song leads onto the next like a slowly evolving constellation.”
